Soccer Rules Every Goalie Must Know
Soccer goalie rules are a set of guidelines that help to regulate the game and keep each soccer goalkeeper at their best behaviours and performance.
These rules strictly apply to all goalkeepers, especially the adult and youthful goalies playing the game professionally.
So what are these soccer goalie rules we speak so much about?
First of all these rules, we're talking about were officially implemented by FIFA, the international governing body of soccer all over the world.
And these rules were made to cater for goalies at every point of the game ranging from 90-minutes to Extra -time and penalty shootouts. These rules have been duely observed by majority of the soccer leagues and youthful competitions all over the world.
Equipment and Kits
As a soccer goalie, you are meant to put on a different colour of equipment and Kits from his teammates as well as the opposing team and referees. A soccer goalie must put on a soccer glove before he is allowed to take his position as the goalkeeper in every game.
Fouls
Although goalkeepers are rarely booked by the referees during the game, it is very possible for a goalie to commit a foul just like field players. When a goalkeeper intentionally trips an opposition player or pulls on his jersey, a foul could be immediately awarded against his team, in most cases he could be issued a yellow or red card depending on the severity of the foul. If the foul is given within the penalty box, a penalty kick will immediately be awarded to the opposition team.
Goal Kick rule
If the ball goes out of play behind the goal line after making contact with a player of the opposition team, a goal kick is awarded. The goal kick can be taken from any point along the 6-yard box.
Soccer Goalie Rules For Handling The Ball (FIFA)
1) As a soccer goalkeeper, you're allowed to use any part of your body to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line.
2) No goal will be counted until the whole circumference of the soccer ball is confirmed to have gone past the goal line.
3) Once the goalie steps out of the penalty box, he is immediately assumed to be another outfield player and is strictly denied the ability to use his hands.
4) The goalkeeper cannot pick the ball with his hands when he receives a pass or throw from his teammates.
5) When a goalkeeper catches a back pass or throw-in from any of his teammates with his hands, the referee Immediately awards an indirect freekick against his team.
6)The only back pass that a soccer goalie can pick up with his hands is a pass done with the head or chest of his teammate.
7)Once a soccer goalie drops the ball with his hand, he is not allowed to pick it up with his hands.
Soccer Goalie Rules For YouthAnd Adult Soccer as Adopted By AYSO(American Youth Soccer Organization)
This body regulates youth soccer solely in the U.S. Although they operate solely in the U.S, they have adopted all soccer goalie rules as implemented by FIFA with an exception of one rule. This one soccer rule states that:
If a soccer goalie punts the ball in the air from his own penalty box into his opponents own penalty box, an indirect freekick(to be taken from the centre spot on the halfway line) is immediately awarded against his team.
The goalie can kick the ball to the other end of the field targeting the thin area outside the penalty box that's within range of the far goal line. Also, the goalkeeper is allowed to kick the ball the full length of the field and score.
The AYSO rules are very particular about the safety of the soccer goalie. That's why the youth soccer body insists on the following rules.:
1) The goalie must and should not be perplexed or agitated in any way when trying to put the ball to play
2) One could be booked for trying to mark or attack the goalkeeper while he/she tries to put the ball to play.
3)The referee should always look out for the overall well being of the soccer goalie as this is found to be very important.
